How Does Order Fulfilment Work?
Order fulfilment is the process of receiving, processing, and delivering customer orders. It covers everything from storing products to packing and shipping them when an order comes in. For online sellers, especially those who are growing fast, outsourcing fulfilment to a specialist company can save time, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

Step 1: Product Receiving
Order fulfilment begins when products arrive at the PackBase fulfilment centre. The warehouse team inspects the incoming inventory for quality and accuracy, then logs each SKU (stock-keeping unit) into an inventory management system. This ensures that inventory levels are tracked in real time, so you never sell something you can’t deliver. Step 2: Storage
Next, your products are stored safely and efficiently. PackBase use various storage methods—like racking, shelving, or bins—depending on the type and size of the products you're storing with us. Temperature control or special segregation might be needed for items like food, cosmetics, or organic goods. Proper organisation allows for fast picking and reduces the chance of errors. Step 3: Order Processing
When a customer places an order online, the order information is automatically transmitted to the PackBase - this usually happens through an integration with your eCommerce platform. Our fulfilment team sees exactly what’s been ordered and where it needs to go. Step 4: Picking
The picking process involves locating and retrieving each product in an order from its allocated storage location. The PackBase team use pick lists generated by our warehouse management system to ensure the right items and quantities are selected. This step is crucial for accuracy. Step 5: Packing
Once picked, the items are carefully packed by our tem according to your preferences, product requirements, and brand style. This might involve branded boxes, eco-friendly packaging, protective materials, and adding packing slips or promotional inserts. The goal is to protect the products during transit and create an excellent unboxing experience for the customer. Step 6: Shipping
After packing, orders are labelled and shipped via courier or postal service. Fulfilment centres often partner with multiple carriers to offer the most cost-effective or fastest delivery options. Real-time tracking numbers are uploaded back to your online store so your customers can follow their order’s journey. Step 7: Returns Processing
If a customer isn’t satisfied with the product, returns processing is a vital part of fulfilment. The returned products are inspected, processed for restocking or disposal, and the customer is refunded or sent a replacement. A smooth returns process builds trust and repeat business. |
